Director of Ahaan, Nikhil Pherwani shares the emotional reason behind the need to tell a story based on Down Syndrome

As the protagonist, played by the talented Abuli Mamaji, goes through life spreading joy and laughter despite suffering from Down Syndrome, he encounters a middle-aged man and the two begin a novel friendship as they find new perspectives on life. With this film, director Nikhil Pherwani presents an upbeat and fresh point of view, creating an exciting world with unique and quirky characters.

Talking about what motivated him to make a film on this subject, director Nikhil Pherwani shares, “I’ve always observed how differently-abled individuals are treated differently, sometimes even less than human. This made me ponder about a few things – What goes on in the life of a young adult with an intellectual disability? How do their parents cope with uncertainty about their child’s future? What happens to them once their parents and immediate family members are gone? Are they capable of leading an independent life? Intrigued by these thoughts, I knew without reservation that I must make a film exploring a humane story.”

He further adds, “It is not a very easy task to choose the path less taken but it certainly is fulfilling. My reason to make this movie was very simple, I want the audience to open their minds and hearts to accept different stories of people from all walks of life. It is a celebration of my lead actor Abuli Mamaji, his compassion, his hope and his courage. I just want to normalize stories like these and promote inclusion through my film.”

Apart from Abuli Mamaji playing the lead role of Ahaan, we also have Arif Zakaria, Niharika Singh, Rajit Kapur and Plabita Borthakur playing pivotal parts in the film. A Will Finds Way Films production, this slice-of-life film is all set to release in theatres on 19th March 2021.
