Raja Krishna Menon’s last film, Airlift, managed to impress the critics and audiences alike. So when it was announced that the filmmaker was collaborating with Saif Ali Khan to remake Jon Favreau’s Chef, the expectations were high. However, the trailer failed to create too much buzz, and it looks like that has affected Chef’s opening day collection as well.
The film received mixed reviews from critics, and needs to show a stupendous growth on the weekend, to break even. On Friday, Saif Ali Khan, Padmapriya Janakiraman and Svar Kamble starrer recorded low occupancy of around 10% across the country for morning shows and reported slight growth in footfalls over the evening and night shows at multiplexes.
Chef has collected 1.05 crores on its 1st day at the box office which is lower than movies like Simran (2.77 crores), Bhoomi (2.25 crores), Haseena Parkar (1.87 crores), Lucknow Central (2.04 crores), Daddy (1.25 crores), Poster Boys (1.75 crores), Indu Sarkar (1.20 crores) & a huge list to count.
On the next day i.e. Saturday due to weekend, the movie showed little jump and raked the business of 1.35 crores to make it’s 2 days domestic total 2.40 crores on 1570 screens. Chef is facing tough competition at the box office from Varun Dhawan-starrer Judwaa 2, which continues to fare well.
Chef is the story of Roshan Kalra (Saif Ali Khan), the head chef of a three-Michelin-starred restaurant who loses his job after punching a customer. He rediscovers his passion for cooking and what he missed out on by being an absentee father when he starts running a food truck, and in the process, reconnect with his son.
