In a historic first, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has won the Best Actor award at the 71st National Film Awards for his compelling dual performance in the 2023 blockbuster Jawan. The win marks a major milestone in the career of one of India’s most beloved and enduring film icons, coming over three decades after his cinematic debut.

Khan shared the prestigious honor in a tie with Vikrant Massey, who was recognized for his sensitive portrayal in 12th Fail. The awards were officially announced by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting on August 1, 2025, and immediately sparked celebration across the Indian film industry and among fans worldwide.

Often hailed as the King of Bollywood, Shah Rukh made his debut in 1992 with Deewana and quickly rose to become one of the most beloved and bankable actors in the country. Despite starring in numerous critically acclaimed and blockbuster films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Swades, Chak De! India, and My Name Is Khan, the prestigious National Award had remained just out of reach—until now.

In a video message on Instagram on Friday, the 59-year-old actor said the National Film Award serves as a reminder that his work “matters” and encourages him to “keep going, working hard, keep creating and keep serving cinema”.

“I am overwhelmed with gratitude, pride and humility. To be honored with the National Award is a moment that I will cherish for a lifetime,” he said in the video message.

The actor extended his thanks to the award jury, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, and his recent collaborators — directors Rajkumar Hirani (Dunki), Siddharth Anand (Pathaan) and especially Atlee.
