Shahid Kapoor’s much-anticipated mythological sci-fi film Ashwatthama: The Saga Continues is officially no longer happening, with producer Jackky Bhagnani confirming that the ambitious project has been shelved.

The film was announced in early 2024 by Bhagnani’s Pooja Entertainment and Prime Video as part of the streaming platform’s slate. The project was envisioned as a large-scale cinematic spectacle, with Shahid Kapoor attached to headline the film. However, reports soon surfaced that the project had been put on the back burner.
Now, Bhagnani has confirmed that Ashwatthama will not be moving forward and has opened up about the reasons behind the decision.
“There were multiple reasons why we decided against it,” Bhagnani said, adding that the release of Kalki 2898 AD in 2024 was also a factor in reassessing the project.
According to the producer, the success of large-scale films has less to do with the money invested and more to do with the uniqueness of their content. “When you make a big-scale film, the audience doesn’t judge you on the basis of the amount of money you have spent on it, but on how unique your content is. If it’s not unique, that money goes down the drain,” he explained.
Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD, which combined Indian mythology with futuristic science fiction, emerged as a major box-office success and demonstrated the potential of ambitious Indian genre cinema. Its arrival also raised the bar for films attempting to blend mythology, spectacle and futuristic storytelling.
For Ashwatthama, the changing landscape appears to have prompted the makers to reconsider whether the project offered enough originality to justify its scale and investment. Rather than proceeding with a film that may not have felt distinctive enough to audiences, the team ultimately decided to abandon the project.
The shelving of Ashwatthama marks the end of one of Shahid Kapoor’s most ambitious announced projects. While details about what the film could have looked like remain limited, Bhagnani’s comments indicate that creative concerns, alongside the changing expectations of audiences following films such as Kalki 2898 AD, played an important role in the decision.
For now, Shahid Kapoor’s Ashwatthama: The Saga Continues remains one of the high-profile Bollywood projects that generated considerable anticipation but ultimately never made it to the screen.
