Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ to release on April 28, 2023; Teaser Out Now!

Filmmaker Mani Ratnam will be back in 2023 with the sequel of Ponniyin Selvan. PS-1 released worldwide in theatres on September 30, 2022, in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. The announcement for PS-2 was made on December 28, 2022. The makers have announced that the sequel will head to the silver screens on April 28, 2023.

The teaser shows a glimpse of Aditya Karikalan (Vikram) sitting in front of a Kali statue whereas Arulmozhi Varman (Jayam Ravi) is walking amongst several monks. Vandhiyathevan (Karthi) is wounded in the forest whereas Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is seen through a mirror reflection. Lyca Productions’ tweeted, “Let’s get those swords in the air as we await the 28th of April 2023!”

The magnum opus with a stellar cast includes Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sarath Kumar, Vikram Prabhu, Sobhita Dhulipala, Jayaram, Prabhu, Parthiban, and Prakash Raj. The film is based on Kalki’s eponymous Tamil novel that was serialised in the 1950s and has remained a sensational success ever since.

PS-1 is set in the 10th century as Ponniyin Selvan tracked the factional power struggles within the Chola Empire, with enemies of the state acting as catalysts. The story is set in the tumultuous period before Ponniyin Selvan (son of River Kaveri), later known as Rajaraja Chola became one of the greatest emperors in Indian history ushering in a golden age. 969 AD, The Chola Empire – a period of conspiracies, mysteries, political turmoil and impending war as Pandiya rebels take an oath to spill royal blood and Chola chieftains plan a mutiny. Will the next king be the wild prince Aditya Karikalan, the hermit prince Arunmozhi Varman, their estranged uncle Madhuranthakan or the Pandiya rebel Amarabujanga?

AR Rahman scored the music for the film. With Ravi Varman handling the cinematography and Thota Tharrani as the production designer and Sreekar Prasad as editor, the film is produced by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.
