The final day-one figures are expected to increase once all late-night shows are accounted for.

The film witnessed a massive release across the country, screening in 10,203 shows nationwide, reflecting the enormous anticipation surrounding Vijay’s final film before transitioning fully into politics.
The strong opening highlights Vijay’s enduring popularity, especially in Tamil Nadu, where theatres witnessed packed audiences and celebratory first-day-first-show screenings.
About Jana Nayagan
Jana Nayagan is a 2026 Tamil-language political action thriller directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions. The film features an ensemble cast led by Vijay, alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, and Priyamani.
The movie is a partial remake of the 2023 Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari. It carries added significance as it marks Vijay’s final film appearance before entering full-time politics. It is also the first film released after Vijay assumed office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, making it one of the most talked-about releases of the year.
A Troubled Journey to Release
Originally slated for a 9 January 2026 release, Jana Nayagan faced several delays due to certification issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The film encountered another major setback when it was leaked online on 9 April 2026, leading to widespread piracy. The producers initiated legal action against social media accounts and websites that circulated clips and illegal links to the film.
After resolving the censorship issues, Jana Nayagan finally hit theatres worldwide on 23 July 2026.
Audience and Critical Response
The film has opened to mixed reviews from critics and audiences. While Vijay’s performance has received widespread appreciation, the screenplay, second half, and climax have drawn criticism from reviewers.
Despite the mixed critical reception, the film has managed to attract strong footfalls on its opening day, largely driven by Vijay’s massive fan base and the historical significance of the release.
