Bhansali Production and Pen India Limited film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ piqued the curiosity of the viewers with its intriguing trailer and melodious music before it even released. It looks like the film has managed to perform equally well on its release.
In Sajay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, Alia plays the role of a brothel worker who later turned into a mafia queen. The film is loosely based on the true story of Gangubai Harjivandas, popularly known as Gangubai Kothewali, whose life was documented in the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai written by S. Hussain Zaidi.
For its solid content, powerful direction and brilliant performances by the actors especially Alia, this biographical crime drama has received mostly positive reviews from the critics as well as the audience.
On the opening day, Gangubai Kathiawadi started the journey on a decent note with 15-20% of occupancy across the country for morning shows. Due to positive word of mouth, it witnessed a good jump in metro cities post noon shows and has done the business of 10.50 crores from 3500 screens across India.
The movie also features, Ajay Devgn, Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Seema Bhargava Pahwa, Indira Tiwari, and Varun Kapoor in supporting roles. Meanwhile, Huma Qureshi in a special appearance as Dilruba.
