The upcoming romantic comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, has had one of the most talked-about release schedules in recent times. From shifting release dates to a high-profile legal battle, the film’s path to the big screen has been anything but smooth.
Initially, Bhool Chuk Maaf was slated to hit theaters on April 10, 2025. With a quirky premise involving a groom stuck in a time loop during his pre-wedding rituals, the film had already generated significant buzz. However, just weeks before release, the producers announced a sudden change — the film would skip theaters and premiere directly on Amazon Prime Video on May 16, 2025.
The reason? Reportedly, national security concerns in light of ongoing events in Pahalgam led to the decision to go digital, a move meant to avoid box office uncertainty.
This surprise shift didn’t sit well with PVR Inox, one of India’s largest multiplex chains. The company filed a legal petition against the producers, citing a binding agreement that guaranteed an 8-week theatrical window before any digital release. On May 9, 2025, the Bombay High Court issued a stay on the OTT release, putting the film’s future in limbo.
Following court proceedings and behind-the-scenes negotiations, an agreement was finally reached. Bhool Chuk Maaf is now set for a theatrical release on May 23, 2025, with its digital premiere locked in for June 6, 2025 on Amazon Prime Video.
