Arshad Warsi Returns as Jolly in ‘Jolly LLB 4’, Umesh Shukla to Direct Prequel

The popular courtroom comedy franchise Jolly LLB is gearing up for its fourth instalment, with Arshad Warsi set to return as the central character. According to a report by Variety India, the upcoming film is currently in pre-production and is expected to complete shooting by January 2027. The makers have yet to finalise the film’s title.

Arshad Warsi Returns as Jolly in 'Jolly LLB 4', Umesh Shukla to Direct Prequel

Unlike the earlier instalments, the fourth film will reportedly be a prequel rather than a continuation of the existing storyline. Filmmaker Umesh Shukla is attached to direct the project, marking a change in the franchise’s directorial lineup. The first three films were written and directed by Subhash Kapoor.

Warsi’s return to the lead role is particularly significant for the franchise. The actor first portrayed lawyer Jagdish Tyagi, popularly known as Jolly, in the original Jolly LLB, released in 2013. However, Akshay Kumar took over the lead in the second instalment, Jolly LLB 2, before both actors came together in Jolly LLB 3 for a courtroom showdown between their respective characters.

The third film brought the franchise’s two Jollys into the same courtroom, with Warsi reprising Jagdish Tyagi and Kumar playing Jagdishwar Mishra. Their face-off extended the series’ established mix of courtroom drama, social commentary and comedy, while expanding its central narrative.

With the fourth instalment reportedly going back in time, Warsi will once again take centre stage. Details about the plot, supporting cast and the period in which the prequel will be set have not yet been officially announced.

Will Familiar Faces Return in ‘Jolly LLB 4’?

Another point of interest is whether the upcoming film will bring back familiar faces from the original 2013 film. Saurabh Shukla, whose portrayal of Judge Tripathi became one of the franchise’s defining elements, remains a key name associated with the series. His character’s measured interventions and comic timing have played an important role in balancing the courtroom drama with humour.

The original film also featured Amrita Rao, Boman Irani, Mohan Kapoor and Sanjay Mishra in significant roles. Whether any of these actors will return for the prequel remains unknown, as the makers have yet to reveal the complete cast.

Director Umesh Shukla is known for films such as OMG: Oh My God! and 102 Not Out, both of which combine humour with themes rooted in everyday life and society. His involvement raises questions about how the new instalment will approach the franchise’s signature blend of legal proceedings, satire and character-driven comedy.

The Jolly LLB series has built its identity around legal battles that explore justice, privilege and accountability through an accessible mix of humour and social commentary. While the fourth film is expected to revisit the franchise’s past, it remains to be seen whether it will retain the familiar courtroom format and bring back more of the original cast.

With filming reportedly scheduled to wrap by January 2027, the fourth Jolly LLB film is expected to arrive in 2027. Further details, including its official title, release date and casting announcements, are awaited.
