After the unprecedented success of Kantara (2022), Rishab Shetty returned with Kantara: Chapter 1 — a highly ambitious prequel that dives deep into the origins of divine forces, tribal heritage, and land conflicts that shaped the universe of the original. While the 2022 film was a surprise breakout hit rooted in local folklore, Chapter 1 attempts to scale those roots into an epic mythological saga.

Plot Summary (No Spoilers)
Set centuries before the events of the first film, Kantara: Chapter 1 explores the ancestral beginnings of the Panjurli and Guliga traditions. The story follows a fierce tribal warrior (played by Rishab Shetty) caught between the wrath of feudal kingdoms, the preservation of sacred land, and the spiritual calling of the divine.
We are introduced to ancient rulers, forest tribes, rituals, and mythological beings — all converging in a slow-burning tale that balances physical battles with spiritual warfare.
Performances
Rishab Shetty is once again the soul of the film. His portrayal of the tribal leader is intense, physical, and emotionally resonant. He seamlessly transitions between fierce warrior and vulnerable devotee. Rukmini Vasanth delivers a grounded and impactful performance as Kanakavathi, bringing emotional depth and quiet strength to the narrative. Gulshan Devaiah, as the antagonist Kulasekhara, has a meaty role but his character feels slightly underwritten, more symbolic than layered. The supporting cast serves the story well, though not all characters are fully fleshed out.
Direction & Writing
Rishab Shetty deserves credit for his vision. The world-building in Chapter 1 is expansive and textured, drawing from real folklore and ancient customs. However, the screenplay takes its time — perhaps too much — in building the mythos, causing pacing issues in the first half.
Technical Brilliance
Cinematography by Arvind S. Kashyap is a standout — the forests, rituals, and dramatic action sequences are visually stunning. Ajaneesh Loknath’s music and background score elevate crucial moments, especially in the climax. The sound design is immersive and theatrical, especially in scenes involving spiritual possession or ritual performances. VFX and practical effects are mostly effective, though a few green-screen-heavy scenes slightly detract from the realism.
Weaknesses
The slow pacing and extended world-building may test the patience of some viewers. Comic relief moments feel out of place and disrupt the tone. Certain characters, including the antagonist, lack sufficient development.
Final Words
Kantara: Chapter 1 stands tall as one of 2025’s most ambitious and unforgettable films. Visually arresting, culturally rooted, and emotionally charged — it’s a rare blend of myth, meaning, and movie magic.
