Box Office: First Day Collection of Wajah Tum Ho

Every Friday we see a new release at the box office but post the nationwide cash crunch which followed the Central government’s November 8 decision to demonetise high-value currency notes, last few weeks haven’t been great for Hindi films. Other than a stray Dear Zindagi and Befikre to some extent, films have failed to mint money at ticket windows. This week’s release, Wajah Tum Ho also opened slow despite being postponed to avoid demonetisation woes.

It was the right move too since the majority of the film’s audiences flock to single screens theatres and there were no ways they would have preferred watching a movie over managing their meagre cash. The films that released in the interim period, Kahaani 2 and Befikre, were primarily multiplex affairs and could still go the distance. Gurmeet Choudhary and Sana Khan’s erotic thriller Wajah Tum Ho, however, received an average response at the box office on its opening day with 15-20% of occupancy in the morning shows across the country.

While it is the sole release of the week, it still has to contend with Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor’s Befikre which is still going strong. The Aditya Chopra film has earned Rs 48.75 crore in the first week of its release. The film is expected to increase its earnings further and that may happen at the cost of Wajah Tum Ho. The last erotic thriller to do well was Hate Story 3 which had released exactly a year ago and had practically the same team of producer [T-Series], director [Vishal Pandya] and actor [Sharman Joshi].

It was a well-made film that had allowed the collections to cross Rs. 50 crore. Vishal Pandya’s directorial Wajah Tum Ho has approx. 2000 screens across the country and recorded 20-25% of occupancy on the opening day. As per the report, it has registered the average business of 2.86 crores {1995 screens}on domestic box office. Whereas Hate Story 2 & 3 did the opening business of 5.26 crores and 9.72 crores respectively.
