Ok Jaanu Trailer Release Date is Out
This seems to be the mantra of the millennials. Whether the issue at hand is finding a job, making Friday night plans or handling relationships. There are no hassles of planning every step given the convenient disposal of communication technology. Going by the poster released by trade analyst Taran Adarsh, filmmaker Shaad Ali’s romantic comedy titled Ok Jaanu seems to tread on the same lines. The story revolves around a couple who are in a live-in relationship in Mumbai. Since the concept of cohabitation lands somewhere in the grey area between the holy matrimony and commitment phobia, the poster also gives out hints of the same.
The most evident hint is the way the lead actors are kissing each other. Unlike the poster of Aditya Chopra’s Befikre, the kiss is not about a uninhibited lip-locking but is more restrained in nature. While it is the girl who seems to be initiating the kiss, she also places her hand gently on the boy’s lips. Thus, it is her hand that acts as a filter for all the love and energy flowing between the two, which probably prevents the live-in relationship to turn into a marriage. While Shraddha Kapoor’s character, with her eyes closed, seems to be completely immersed in the kiss, the face of Aditya Roy Kapur’s character shows signs of blushing and hints of his drool-worthy dimple. Also, their image is superimposed on a picture of Chowpatty, Mumbai which is the setting of the film.
If we dig deeper, the beach is symbolic in nature of the fine line between stability and liberty, the same areas that the film explores, the dichotomy represented by the narrow strip where the sand and the sea diffuse into each other. This merging is not confined to one spot as it is governed by the high and low tides of life. Ok Jaanu is Shaad Ali’s first film in almost three years after the disastrous Kill Dill of 2014. This is also his first film outside the Yash Raj Films banner as the movie is jointly produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies. Interestingly, Ali has worked under Ratnam as an Assistant Director in the 1998 romantic war thriller Dil Se, the 2007 biopic Guru and the 2010 thriller Raavan.
Another reason why Ratnam is associated with this film is because it is a remake of his 2015 Tamil directorial Ok Kanmani. In another similarity with the its Tamil counterpart, Ok Jaanu has the former Chairperson of Central Board of Film Certification Leela Samson playing a supporting role in her first Hindi film, reprising the role from her debut film Ok Kanmani. Naseeruddin Shah reprises the role of Prakash Raj who played Samson’s husband in Ok Kanmani. The old couple play landlords to the young couple of Aditya-Shraddha in the film.
Also, AR Rahman has rehashed the entire background score of Ok Kanmani for the Hindi remake, barring three songs for which he has come up with original compositions. The lyrics are written by Gulzar who is all set to enchant the audience with his magical collaboration with fellow multiple time National Award winners Rahman and Ratnam. Ok Jaanu will be one of the rare Hindi films to explore the concept of live-in relationships in depth. Siddharth Anand’s urbane Salaam Namaste from 2005 and Manish Sharma’s rusty Shuddh Desi Romance from 2013 are among the other few. The first poster of Ok Jaanu was unveiled yesterday and both Aditya and Shraddha were making all go aww. Today Karan Johar has shared another poster of the alleged lovebirds with a caption that reads, “Trailer out on Monday!!!! Here is another new look of #OkJaanu….Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha kapoor!!!!
Ok Jaanu is slated to release on 13 January, 2017.
