R Balki’s film PadMan starring Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor talks about one thing that most Indians are reluctant to talk about but needs to be discussed more often – menstruation and menstrual hygiene. The movie is inspired by the real life story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, who is revolutionising low-cost sanitary napkins in rural India.
PadMan has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. While the theme of the movie is laudable, the movie could have been handled in a more nuanced manner, many critics mention. Nevertheless, PadMan has got people talking about periods and sanitary napkins all over social media.
On the opening day, R Balki’s directorial started it’s journey on a decent note and registered the second opening of 2018 in Bollywood with 10.26 crores of business from 2750 screens nationwide. On the next day i.e. Saturday, due to weekend and favorable waves over box office, PadMan took jump and did the business of 13.68 crores.
Then on the next day i.e. Sunday, the movie recorded more growth and minted the amount of 16.11 crores. After the opening weekend, total collection of PadMan has become 40.05 crores from around 2750 screens at domestic box office. Akshay-Radhika-Sonam starrer seems to remain strong in weekdays as well, also there is a holiday on Tuesday due to Maha Shivratri.
So it has a bonus chance to boost up it’s first week business. PadMan was initially scheduled to be released on Republic Day weekend, clashing with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat and Neeraj Pandey’s Aiyaary. However, on Bhansali’s request Akshay Kumar postponed PadMan to give Padmaavat solo release over the weekend. Aiyaary makers too postponed its release.
