Box Office: First Day Collection of Mohenjo Daro
Mohenjo Daro starring Hrithik Roshan and Pooja Hegde received mixed reviews on day 1 of its opening. Ashutosh Gowariker’s period drama saw about 25 percent occupancy in the morning, which climbed up to 40 per cent as the day progressed. The film which opened on around 2500 screens is expected to earn around Rs 8.87 crore on box office day one. Mohenjo Daro is set in the Indus Valley civilisation and will see Hrithik romancing Pooja on awe-inspiring sets. Ashutosh Gowariker-directed movie has raked in Rs 45 crore from selling its satellite rights.
The other Rs 15 crore have come from the sale of music rights. A R Rahman has composed the music for Mohenjo Daro. The estimated cost of the whole project, including publicity and advertising is Rs 115 crores, sources confirmed. Mohenjo Daro will now have to earn Rs 45 crore in India and Rs 15 crore in overseas market to break even with its overall cost. It clashed with another big film, Akshay Kumar-starrer Rustom. The courtroom drama is based on the 50s Nanavati murder case and also stars Ileana D’Cruz and Esha Gupta.
The Hrithik Roshan starrer has been released in 2500 screens, while the Akshay Kumar starrer managed to get 2300 theatres in the domestic market on Aug.12. The hype and promotion helped both “Mohenjo Daro” and “Rustom” record decent advance booking. But the Akshay Kumar starrer had an upper hand than the Hrithik starrer.
Akshay plays a naval officer in the film who finds out that his wife is having an extramarital affair. The case had a wide-ranging impact on the Indian judicial system. While Akshay’s film got an upper hand in north India, Mohenjo Daro is performing well in south India. However, in terms of pure numbers, Akshay and his Rustom is expected to do better on day one at box office.
