Akira 5th Day Collection, Now Faces Abrupt Fall in Business

Box Office: Tuesday Collection of Sonakshi starrer ‘Akira’

Sonakshi Sinha’s “Akira” has maintained a good pace at the box office since its opening day but its collection dropped on its 1st Monday. In spite of being a holiday for Ganesh Chaturthi, the film’s business on Sept. 5 got almost half of what it had done on Sunday. Business of “Akira” had apparently suffered on its opening day as it was a nationwide strike. However, the film had managed to make decent collection of Rs. 5.15 crore on Friday at the domestic market. The Sonakshi-starrer had kept up the momentum in the following days, witnessing rise in its collection over the weekend.

Directed by AR Murugadoss, the film had earned Rs. 5.30 crore on Saturday and Rs. 6.20 crore on Sunday. It was expected that “Akira” would maintain the pace on its 4th day as well, as it was a holiday. However, Monday collection of “Akira” was almost half of its Sunday earning. “Akira” collected Rs. 3.40 crore nett at the Indian box office on Monday, taking its 4 days domestic box office collection to Rs. 20.05 crore. “#Akira Fri 5.15 cr, Sat 5.30 cr, Sun 6.20 cr, Mon 3.40 cr. Total: 20.05 cr. India biz. STEADY! [sic],” Taran Adarsh tweeted.  On Tuesday, it witnessed similar response and raked 2.40 crores, to make its 5 days domestic total as 22.45 crores.

The movie had received mixed reviews from the critics, but has been enjoying positive word of mouth, which was reflected in its collection over the weekend. However, the action drama’s Monday collection was below expectation, considering it was a holiday. Being a solo release, and “A Flying Jatt” failing to make much impact at the box office, “Akira” is likely to continue decent business over the week.

But the movie will certainly have tough competition from “Baar Baar Dekho” that is slated to be released on Sept. 9.  Having been made on a budget of Rs. 30 crore, the film had recovered half of the total cost through the sale of its satellite and music rights only. Thus, “Akira” is running at a profit and is also having a good run in the overseas market of UAE-GCC and Pakistan.
