Sultan 31st Day Collection: 5th Friday Business Report

Sultan 31 Days Box Office Collection

For the past few weeks, two films have been battling out to be the top earners of this year: Sultan and Kabali. While Kabali is set to have reportedly earned around Rs 500 crores (we are still unsure about official figures), Sultan is set to have stopped just before Rs 300 crore. Soon enough, a strange hashtag started to trend on Twitter, which led us to believe this figure may not be the real one. #YRFStopReducingSultanFigures started to trend, and it then came to attention that the film had actually crossed the 300 crore mark long ago, but it was not being reported. But why would the producers of a film want to downplay their box office collections?

DNA reports the reason for these reduced figures is a partnership deal that YRF has with Salman. According to the deal, if Sultan crosses the 300 crore mark, Salman is entitled to getting a big chunk of the collections. This deal was struck when Aditya Chopra approached Salman Khan for Sultan. The latter demanded, just like Aamir and Shah Rukh Khan, that he should get a 80:20 profit sharing ratio. And so, by showing lower figures, YRF can lessen the profits to be given to Salman. They had reportedly done the same during Ek Tha Tiger, when they showed the collections to be Rs 199.6 crore when it was no secret that film had crossed more than Rs 200 crore.

All of this could be conjecture of course, but for a film that made Rs 200 crore in the first seven days of its release, Rs 300 crore should not be taking this long. Sultan grossed 4.48 crore nett in its fourth week taking its business to over 298.23 crore nett. On its 5th Friday, Sultan reported slight lesser response than previous day and estimated to add the amount of 0.24 crore to its account. With this, its 31 days total will become 298.47 crores across India.

The film is gradually inching to the the 300 crore nett mark. The drop in collections in week three was 68% while in week four it is 72% this is because of stronger competition in the fourth week with Dishoom. This week has many releases but all are small releases so Sultan should add a 1 or 1,5 crore this week but next week the collections will slow into lakhs as Mohenjo Daro and Rustom hit the theatres. The Gross figures of the film are very close to Bajrangi Bhaijaan even though nett will short of 15 odd crore. This due to Entertainment tax being at different rates especially in Delhi / UP. The business of Sultan till date is as follows.
